The 2018 Margaret River Vintage has been underway for a few weeks now at Harmans Estate. After an average rainfall winter, and a moderate start to summer, the season was shaping up to be a good one. With almost no weather events (maybe a little bit of rain in early February), the expectations were starting to rise of the quality. Mid February came, and the white varieties were all ripe at the same time, and we saw intense flavours, intense aromas and wonderful character off the vine. The wonderful display of Marri Blossum (the flowers on the Marri trees) was the most I have seen in Margaret River in a very long time, kept the birds away.
Now we are almost at the end of the white part of vintage, the early report is - how wonderful is Margaret River. I get the opportunity to craft wines from some of the most wonderful vineyards in the world in one of the best seasons.... ever.
Reds will follow next week - I am excited.
